Vision of Nana Kwadwo Tanno II for Breman Fawomanyo Development

Having been installed as the custodian of the lands and chief for the people of Fawomaye (River Island Village), Nana nana1Kwadwo Tano II has continuously embarked on several endeavours to transform the fortunes of his people by improving their living conditions within the areas of health, education, security, local economic enterprise growth and general social development efforts. Having consulted and engaged with his people and carried out an initial needs assessment of his people, Nana Tano II has outlined certain projects as priority within the short to medium term as very crucial for the upliftment of his people. These projects collectively are massive with his leadership inspired by the Christian faith and spurred by its fundamentals believe that the Lord is able to garner support to see these vision items into realism.

A.    Education
Education remains one of the most testified result-oriented tools for poverty alleviation. Nana Tano II is very passionate about education which has resulted in previous activities and donations of items for the current basic school in the community. There are yet several and major activities or projects that is required to raise the standard of education to an appreciable state for the community. Nana Tano II continues to raise and source for donations from his own ventures and well-wishing philanthropists to contribute to ensuring that the lives of both pupils and teachers are comfortable and the environment conducive for teaching and learning. Nana Tano II envisages the development of education in the River Island to a state where students leaving the community would only be to the Senior High School (Medium Term) and Tertiary in the long term. He believes this is achievable but underscores the need for a solid basic foundation for education in order to achieve this vision.

In this regard teaching and learning materials (TLS) are one of the main items Nana always sends to his people. All nana2are therefore always encouraged to rather than discard by trashing some educational materials they have used or have no use of again to channel them to his secretariat for onward transmission to his people. Arrangements are also made for individuals to make special donations to the school. Books and computers for the school library is also a pressing need to enhance learning for the pupils. The extension of the current classroom block and adding the Senior High is a priority for the short to medium term.

B.    Health
Nana Kwadjo Tano II is always heart broken when news of his people suffering from very basic health problems have to cover long traveling distances to access health service. In this regard, Nana Tano II together with his people have ranked the construction of a health facility (Clinic or CHPS Compound) within the River Island for his people. Investment have already been made to develop proposals and concept designs for a health facility for his people. Nana Tano II believes that there are several well-wishing philanthropists in the provision of health that should take this as a challenge to contact the secretariat for any assistance to render this service. In the interim we continue to encourage individuals and organizations to as part of their outreach programs and corporate social responsibilities select Fawomanye as a venue for health screening outreaches and medical supplies.

C.    Agriculture
Agriculture remains the mainstay for Ghana as a country and for the people of Fawomanye. It is not encouraging the type and scale of farming activities that are carried out by the people. Peasantry remains the majority (90-97%) of the people. This makes their farming activities not very viable leaving most of them impoverished for the most part of the farming years.

Irrigation
To transform this phenomena, Nana Tano II intends to embark on large scale irrigation farming for some crops and also support farmers with long term cash crop cultivation. A community that is bounded by a river should be able to cultivate and sell food crops and vegetables all year round. This is the vision and as such efforts in this regard for the technology and funding is being sourced to drive it into reality.

Cocoa Cultivation
Cocoa is a very viable cash crop in the enclave and that would be a major point of support. Farmers currently from the needs assessment need some basic training (technical capacity building) and funding to enable move to the next stage in their farming activities.

Agro-Processing
Cassava is another viable crop that is produced by almost every farmer in Fawomanye, a good percentage of yields are lost to post harvest losses each year. In fact this has discouraged young men and women in the community from engaging in the production of this commodity. The irony is that, the end product of cassava is numerous and widely consumed either in raw or processed state by households and industry. Nana Tano II intends to take advantage of this market by investing or looks for investors who would develop a gari processing plan situate in the River Island to process cassava into various uses. The District Assembly currently has a defunct agro-processing machine which requires an assessment and possible restoration as the interim start. Reports from the economic and social benefits to the community and the assembly when this processing plan was in use only supports the enormous rewards that such an investment would yield for the investors and the community.

D.    Security
A cardinal embodiment of the enstoolment of Nana Tano II as the regent of Fawomanye is the security and peace that has been fortified in the community. The immediate security need for the people has to do with the provision of security lights to enhance night economic activity and social life. The streets of the River Island turn dark at dusk thereby discouraging extended economic and social activities and also renders insecure people who out of need have to be out in the night. With the proliferation of solar powered street lights, Nana Tano II with his people are hopeful that help and support or partnerships with interested philanthropists would extend helping hands in this regard for the River Island.

E.    Economic empowerment
This is closely linked with the revamping of agro-processing activities in the community. The intent is to promote off season and lateral skills for especially the youth and women in the community. Skills training in various arts and income generating ventures for the people would provide alternative sources of income that would halt the outflow of youth to the capital and Accra to seek greener pastures. This has been a major bane for the development of the community

F.    Social development
There are other crucial social development projects that Nana Tano II has envisaged for his people’s development. The first in this category is the construction of a community centre, which would function as a town hall where various civic and social events would be held. River Island serves as centre for various programs and such a centre would serve better the community and surrounding villages.

Sanitation is a major social service that is mostly linked with the health of the people. Nana Tanno II intends to embark on a sanitation project that would both serve as employment for some youth and also rid the community of filth. Ideas are being congealed to ascertain the mode of operation for implanting the sanitation project to achieve the result of the consciousness of it being engrained in the fabric of the River Island community.

G.    Traditional Heritage
It is the plan of Nana Tanno II to complete the palace project commenced by Nana Attah. This is to ensure continuity and progression of the traditional heritage of the people of Fawomanyo.  Major renovation works on the current palace is an urgent need for the people as an embodiment of their traditional heritage.
