Historical Background of Fawomanye

Origin

Fawomanye literally means- take your land and govern as you wish. As the name implies, Fawomanye was a result of a problem encountered by one Nana Sakum and the then Omanhene of Bosome traditional area (i.e. Nana Kofi Ahenkorah ).

It is said that Nana Sakum was married to Abena Aso a sister of Nana Kofi Ahenkora. Nana Kofi Ahenkora was also married to Akua Buanyo a relation of Sakum. Unfortunately, there developed a misunderstanding between Sakum and Kofi Ahenkorah over their marital connections.

Nana Sakum is said to have decided to marry Twumwaa a sister of his wife. Aso did not agree to this intention of her husband and this resulted in a quarrel which was reported to Aso’s brother Nana Ahenkorah. Nana Ahenkorah did not take the issue lightly because it’s said he already had some issue with Sakum. Nana Ahenkorah therefore banished Sakum from Bosome traditional area, and whoever went with Sakum was never to return to Bosome traditional area again.

It is even said that Nana Ahenkorah was so annoyed with Sakum that he caused him to be beaten up. Sakum was said to have been saved from this beating by his brother Kwadwo Ampontua (alias Okwanin) who was then acting Ankobeahene because at this time there was no black stool for the Ankobea. Due to the harsh conditions associated with Sakum’s banishment very few people were prepared to go with him.
